Fabio Fabbi

Bologna 1861 - Bologna 1945

Fabio Fabbi was a leading figure in Italian Orientalist painting during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is remembered for his refined scenes set in the Middle East and North Africa, characterized by extraordinary richness of color, meticulous attention to detail, and an elegant academic style.

Born in Bologna on July 18, 1861, into an upper-middle-class family, Fabbi began his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, distinguishing himself in sculpture studies at a very young age. In 1878, he moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he studied under the sculptor Augusto Rivalta.

A pivotal event in his career was a trip to Egypt in 1886, undertaken with his brother Alberto. His time in Alexandria and Cairo gave him the opportunity to observe Oriental settings, costumes, and architecture firsthand, gathering sketches, photographs, and notes that would serve as the primary inspiration for his subsequent body of work. Unlike many European Orientalists, Fabbi built his compositions upon careful observation from life, recreating captivating and authentic scenes within his studio.

Upon returning to Italy, he embarked on an active exhibition career, participating in major national and international shows in Florence, Turin, Milan, and Munich, and garnering numerous accolades. In 1893, he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, and a few years later, he was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy in recognition of his artistic achievements. Fabio Fabbi’s body of work is dominated by Orientalist subjects: odalisques, dancers, markets, harem interiors, musicians, merchants, and processions populate works of great elegance, in which academic style blends with a refined use of light and color.

In his later years, he moved to Casalecchio di Reno, continuing to paint primarily religious subjects until his death on September 24, 1945.

Today, Fabio Fabbi is considered a leading figure in Italian Orientalism. His works are held in museums and prestigious private collections and remain highly sought after on the international market for their exceptional painterly quality, compositional elegance, and the timeless allure of their Oriental settings.
